WORDS BY ALISTAIR MILTON-SEALL
Mike Skinner and The Streets are back.
Now, two singles in with the eclectic and raucous Take Me As I Am featuring fellow Brum boy Chris Lorenzo, and the strangely brilliant Calling My Phone Thinking I’m Doing Nothing Better with the ever magnificent Tame Impala, the reinvigorated Mike Skinner has set some serious benchmarks for The Streets’ upcoming mixtape.
The imminent (and very much needed) album, due to drop on 10th July, features a whole host of amazing artists which can be seen throughout the video of Calling My Phone. And guess what? The first Streets album in nearly a decade will host collaborations with Kevin Parker, Hak Baker and Jimothy Lacoste, emerging rappers such as Ms Banks and Dapz on the Map, and even Idles!
Since bursting onto the scene in 2002 shouting about the pub, his home and even getting a kebab, it feels quite apt that Skinner is back and immediately talking about being on his phone.
So what do we know? It’s called None Of Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive, which seems very fitting for our current situation, and will be the seventh full release from the outfit. We also know that this is something different to previous projects from The Streets. Initially planned as a TONGA release, Skinners’ act with Murkage, Skinner announced there would be a new mixtape (or “duets album”) at the end of the summer and then another album which will be a soundtrack for a film he’s working on. (PSA: both of these projects will be from The Streets).
This collaboration record is obviously going to sound different from the classic sound of The Streets, and the two singles to date show this. Their abrasive nature still carries that familiar Skinner touch, but they’re also heavily influenced by the respective collaborators. It’s fair to say that the two singles maintain the same Streets sound, with lines such as ‘everyone in the club sniffing their keys’, ‘men are weird at the close of the pm/ just ask a pretty girl to show your her dms’ and ‘your mum has good genes, but dad’s are ripped’ proving beyond doubt that Skinner is back, and back with a bang.
Mike Skinner loves to promote other artists and explore new sounds. And with Jimothy Lacoste releasing new music with Always Improving, Tame Impala’s recent ‘Slow Rush’ album, and the mammoth buzz around acts such as Ms Banks, Donae’O and Hak Baker continue to rise, who actually knows what this could sound like? I cant wait to find out.
