“Nervus continue to have their lyrical middle fingers pointed firmly in the direction of Landlords, Tories, Fascists and Capitalists”
WORDS BY GEORGE DOHERTY
Nervus are back with a two track EP recorded in isolation from each other. Nervus continue to have their lyrical middle fingers pointed firmly in the direction of Landlords, Tories, Fascists and Capitalists, layered with extremely catchy pop instrumentals characteristic of their 2019 album Tough Crowd.
Nervus have taken the core of what made the songs on Tough Crowd so excellent and have injected it with a giant syringe filled with litres of spooky juice to produce two new tracks that, while excellent, sound unimaginably cursed. Both We Want Your Blood and Grave Digging feature funfair-esque keys that sound like they were recorded straight from a derelict pier in a forgotten seaside town, mirroring the acidic vocal lines with a jaunty spookiness. The monologue on Grave Digging may well be the peak of Em Foster’s lyricism so far, which is no mean feat considering her already superb back catalogue.
“I hope you realise we’ve been sold a lie about countless avoidable tragedies at the cost of countless lives”
This line serves as both a bleak assessment of the current situation and a damning critique of the ruling party and the politics they represent.
Having mastered the art of weaving a bleak subject matter and furious lyrics into songs filled with hooks and poppy melodies, Nervus have proven that they can add strings to their bow whilst continuing to write excellent songs and spitting in the faces of all the right people. The EP is out now and available for purchase on bandcamp (who are waiving their fees on the first friday of every month).
