“This debut double single is a debut double victory for Spencer Withey”

WORDS BY RACHEL GRICE

Harbouring from the Brighton seafront, one half of the Cosmic Sounds DIY label, famed for sweaty Boileroom nights in Guildford, Spencer Withey has broken out with his debut double single.

Yes, you heard it right, two for the price of one! I Wanna Love You / Inside, released via Cosmic Sounds, defines Spencer’s sound as a solo artist. Spacey and warm with a smattering of psychedelia, these two tracks conjure up soft-serve summers and lager tops.

The first of the two tracks, I Wanna Love You, gives the listener tight drum tracks and a chorus built for singing out of the car window. Taking you through waves of melody created in collaboration with good friends Dylan Dunne and Georgia Butler, I Wanna Love You crescendos with an unexpected but very much welcomed guitar solo, highlighting Spencer’s technical prowess.

Inside hits more of your typical indie feel-good tone, showcasing feathery guitars and Spencer’s low and balmy vocals. Think Mac Demcaro but without the sad boy undertones. The more lo-fi, compact B-side complements I Wanna Love You without overshadowing it.

This debut double single is a debut double victory for Spencer Withey, and with the summer that 2021 (hesitantly) promises on the doorstep, we hope to hear these bedroom tracks outside of these four walls soon.
